HINTS ON RESUME WRITING

  • A resume needs to be well organised, easy to read, interesting and in a professional format.
  • There is no right or wrong way to present a resume, however there are some that work better than others.
  • A resume needs to be constantly adapted to the changing requirements of the labour market.
  • A resume should be typed with details placed under major headings.
  • The length of a basic resume is generally between two to three pages long. Use point form where possible to keep it concise.
  • The length of a functional resume is one page only.
  • Only use information relevant to the employer. This may mean you have slightly different resumes for different job applications.
  • Always try to start statements with positive action words.
  • Contact referees to check they are still agreeable to being a positive referee and give them some information about the position.
